New Slussen masterplan

Designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Berg Arkitektkontor for the City of Stockholm, the New Slussen masterplan replaces a deteriorated cloverleaf junction with a modern integrated transport interchange. Connecting the Gamla Stan and Södermalm districts of Stockholm, the new design improves the balance between road vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, whilst enhancing the public realm and access to the waterfront.

The need to rebuild Slussen’s transport and water infrastructure creates a unique opportunity to reconsider the urban fabric. In acknowledgment of this, the City of Stockholm commissioned a new masterplan design that will regenerate this important part of the city, creating a modern city quarter that will become one of Stockholm’s most vibrant and popular civic destinations.

The masterplan covers an area of Stockholm adjacent to the navigation lock ("slussen") between the Baltic sea and the freshwater Lake Mälaren.

Our traffic department has been involved in the City’s plan to reconfigure Slussen since 2004. We were approached by the City of Stockholm to study traffic planning in detail and establish a comprehensive strategy and baseline constraints for the project.

In 2009, we supported the competition entry by Foster + Partners providing specialist technical expertise in traffic management (pedestrian, cycle and vehicular), environment, geotechnical engineering and water. This complimented the work of our colleagues at AKT II who were commissioned to propose structural concepts for the interconnecting road, tram, metro, rail and pedestrian networks.

Our traffic department remains closely involved in the project, providing advice on the programming of the works and detailed urban design proposals for the shared pedestrian, cycle and vehicular routes.
